A Speaker Spotlight shape in Google Slides can be resized, moved, or masked to suit a presentation layout. The live camera feed follows the shape’s treatment, so inspect the actual video rather than treating the object like a harmless decorative frame. Eligibility and Chrome insertion requirements still apply.
Change the shape
Open the eligible deck on a computer and select the spotlight object. Use the toolbar’s Mask tool > Shapes to choose another outline. Google’s spotlight guidance also allows resizing and rotation like other shapes.
Be careful with rotation or flipping: the official guidance says the video feed also appears rotated or flipped. A decorative angle may make a presenter look awkward or make visible text in the camera view difficult to interpret.
Position it consistently
Leave enough space for slide content and live captions. If the same placement should appear across the deck, right-click the shape and use Add shape to all slides where available. Google says this option requires more than one slide.
Verify the live feed
Start the slideshow, enable the intended camera behavior, and inspect several representative slides. Check the presenter’s face, background, and relationship to chart labels or titles. A well-positioned empty placeholder does not establish a good live composition. Review the result through the actual meeting share if one will be used. Keep the spotlight away from essential evidence and confirm that its presence improves the explanation rather than competing with the slide’s main message. Check closing slides as well as content slides.
