Google Meet can blur the background in the pre-join preview so you can inspect the result before entering a meeting. Blur may reduce visual distractions, but Google warns that sensitive information can remain visible when backgrounds change. Prepare the actual space as well as the effect.
Apply blur in the preview
Open the intended meeting on your computer and remain in the pre-join screen. For the one-click option, use Blur at the bottom right of your self-view. Alternatively, open Backgrounds and effects, choose Backgrounds, and find the blur options under Blur and personal backgrounds. Select slight blur or stronger blur according to the preview you can inspect.
Check the whole visible scene
Look around your outline, hair, chair, and objects close to you. Move normally and check whether material behind you becomes recognizable. Remove or cover sensitive papers and screens instead of relying on segmentation to hide them. Applying an effect automatically turns on the camera, so confirm its state before joining and be ready to turn video off if the environment is unsuitable.
Join with realistic expectations
If the preview is acceptable, join the meeting and confirm the effect remains selected. Background availability depends on the client, account, and administrator settings. People who are not signed in or must knock may only change effects after entering the meeting, so a missing pre-join option is not necessarily a device fault. Effects can also slow a device or increase battery use. If performance worsens, remove the blur and use a plain real background or keep the camera off when appropriate. Ask another participant for a visual check when the meeting requires a reliably distraction-free view.
