Google Meet provides caption appearance settings on a computer so text can be easier to follow against the meeting background. Adjusting these settings changes your reading experience. It does not improve speech recognition or alter another participant’s caption display, so treat readability and transcription accuracy as separate checks.
Open the caption appearance settings
Join the meeting, open More options, select Settings, and choose Captions. Enable captions if needed and select the caption type you intend to use. Under Customize your captions, inspect the available font, font size, font color, and background color controls. Make one adjustment first so its effect is easy to recognize.
Compare the result during real speech
Choose a size that you can read without leaning toward the screen. Select a text and background combination that remains distinguishable while presentation slides and participant tiles change. Have someone speak a few sentences, including a longer sentence, and check whether you can follow the text comfortably. A setting that looks attractive in an empty tray may be less useful while new captions arrive quickly.
Keep or reset the useful combination
Google says caption customization settings are saved automatically. Close the settings panel and check the actual caption tray before continuing the meeting. If your changes make the display harder to read, use the provided Reset control and try a simpler adjustment. When the words themselves are wrong, review the spoken language and audio clarity rather than repeatedly changing colors. If a required appearance control is absent on your device, consult the platform-specific help instead of assuming the computer settings are available in the same place everywhere.
