Set a Google Meet Breakout-Room Timer

A Google Meet breakout timer gives small groups a shared end point. Participants see the remaining time, and each room receives a countdown near the end. Set the duration around the actual discussion task rather than assuming the timer alone explains when or how people should report back.

Set the breakout timer

As the host on a computer, open the breakout-room panel. At the top, select Timer, enter the intended duration, and click OK. Review the displayed timer before opening the rooms or continuing the activity. Explain whether the allotted time includes reading the prompt, preparing a response, or only the discussion itself. This is the breakout timer, rather than a general meeting agenda timer.

Make the end condition clear

Google says each room displays a 30-second countdown before the timer ends, and participants can see the time left at the top of their screen. Tell groups what to finish during that warning and where they should return. Keep a host available for help requests so a group facing a problem does not spend the whole interval waiting without support.

Edit the duration when the task changes

The host can select Timer again to edit or remove it. If you extend the exercise, communicate the new expectation rather than silently changing the panel while groups prepare to stop. When the breakout session ends, participants receive a return prompt and are moved to the main call after the closing interval. Check that everyone returns before beginning the debrief, including telephone and mobile attendees. Do not confuse a visible countdown with proof that every group finished its work. Confirm the saved or reported output separately from the mechanics of returning to the meeting.
