A Google Meet host can create breakout rooms after the main meeting begins. Preparing the room list does not move participants immediately: the host must open the rooms, and participants receive an invitation to join. Explain the task before sending the group away.
Prepare the main-room moderation
Use a computer and an eligible host account. Turn Host Management on before creating the rooms if the session needs meeting safety controls. Assign any co-hosts from the main room, since those appointments cannot be made inside breakouts. Give participants the discussion question, expected output, and help method before opening rooms so late instructions are not lost during the move.
Create and review the room list
At the bottom right, select Meeting tools and Breakout rooms. Choose the number of rooms in the creation panel. Meet distributes call participants across them. Review that initial distribution instead of assuming it matches your intended teams. Move names by dragging them or entering a participant’s name directly into a room. Use Shuffle only if a random grouping is appropriate for the exercise.
Open rooms and check actual movement
When assignments are ready, click Open rooms. Participants need to accept their Join prompt, so check for people who remain in the main call or report unsupported devices. Join individual rooms from the breakout panel when needed, and watch for help notifications. Do not assume the main meeting’s recording captures these discussions; Google does not support breakout recording or live streaming. After the exercise, close the rooms through the breakout panel and verify that participants return. The intended outcome is functioning small-group conversations with the expected members, rather than simply a completed room setup screen.
