Manual Google Meet breakout assignments help keep the right people together for a specific task. Review the roster before opening rooms rather than relying on the initial automatic distribution. A person listed on an invitation may not yet be available as a connected participant.
Open the assignment panel
As a host on a computer, select Meeting tools and Breakout rooms. Choose the room count and inspect the names distributed into each room. Keep your intended team list available so you can compare identities, particularly when attendees have similar display names. Account for participants who joined from a shared conference device instead of individual laptops.
Place the intended names in each room
Drag a participant’s name to the desired room, or enter their name directly into that room using the panel. Review both the destination room and the room they left, so one group is not accidentally emptied or missing its facilitator. If assignments were prepared in advance, check them against the people actually present. Google notes that Group invitees are not automatically available for distribution and recommends individual invitations when advance assignment matters.
Verify the group after opening
Click Open rooms only when the list is ready. Ask participants to accept their Join prompt and report if they remain in the main call. Meet hardware cannot be preassigned before it connects, so handle that device after it enters the meeting. If a late arrival requires a change, use Edit rooms and save the revised arrangement. A listed assignment is not proof that a person accepted the move. Confirm the expected group can converse before starting a timed task, and keep a main-room contact available for anyone whose device cannot participate.
