Understand Google Meet Self-View Mirroring Before Changing Camera Settings

Your Google Meet self-view can look different from the picture other participants receive. Google specifically notes that backgrounds appear mirrored or inverted in self-view while others see the correct orientation. Distinguish that local preview behavior from a wrongly prepared background image or a camera source that is actually reversed.

Use a harmless orientation check

If text in a background appears backward to you, ask a trusted participant to check its orientation on their screen. Use approved nonconfidential text or a harmless object for the comparison. Do not immediately flip the approved image or install a camera extension. A change made only to correct your local impression can create a new problem for the audience.

Separate mirroring from cropping

A narrow portrait tile may also hide part of a background or gesture without reversing anything. Meet’s dynamic layout changes tile proportions according to the browser window, participant count, and active content. Inspect your floating or uncropped self-view when checking the scene, then ask what another viewer sees. Their layout may expose more or less of the image than yours.

Change only the confirmed source problem

If another participant confirms that the transmitted content is wrong, check which camera or virtual video source Meet selected and whether the source application applies its own transformation. For a custom background, compare the approved original file before revising it. Google’s self-view note is not a promise that every third-party camera source is oriented correctly. Record whether the problem appears only locally or also remotely, and whether it affects the background, physical objects, or both. Verify any authorized adjustment with the same remote viewer so a local preview preference does not become an unnecessary asset or camera configuration change.
