A USB headset can be connected during a Google Meet call, but the meeting may continue using the laptop microphone or previous speaker. Select both sides of the headset deliberately. Simply seeing a connected USB device in the operating system does not prove that Meet routes the conversation through it.
Connect and identify the headset
Warn participants briefly before changing audio devices. Connect the headset and wait for the computer to recognize it. In Meet, use the arrow beside the microphone control to inspect the available audio devices, or open Settings and the audio section. Select the headset’s microphone rather than a similarly named speaker output.
Select the matching speaker
Choose the headset for meeting output as well. Google’s audio guidance warns that mismatched microphones and external speakers can cause echo. Use the microphone meter and speaker test to check the two selections. Keep the headset’s physical mute switch in mind when the correct input still receives no sound.
Confirm with another participant
Ask whether your voice is clear and confirm that incoming speech is heard through the headset. If the device is missing from the selection list, check its USB connection and approved device support before installing additional software. Basic audio selection is separate from optional headset button integration, which has its own browser and hardware requirements. Avoid changing those call-control permissions merely to select a microphone. After disconnecting the headset, inspect the replacement selections again: an automatic fallback can use an unintended microphone or a silent display output, changing privacy and audibility without an obvious warning.
