Check How Companion Connections Affect Google Meet Participant Limits

A Companion connection uses Google Meet participant capacity even though its microphone and meeting audio are off. Plan hybrid attendance using connections, not just people seated around a table. A room device plus several personal laptops can consume more meeting capacity than the visible number of physical attendees suggests.

Count the planned meeting connections

List remote participants, room hardware connections, and laptops that will join in Companion mode. Google states that Companion connections and presentations each count toward the participant limit. Do not subtract a laptop merely because its owner is already visible through the room camera. Separate presentation entries can also matter when reviewing the participant list.

Check the meeting’s actual capacity

Meeting capacity depends on the organizer’s eligible edition and meeting configuration. Confirm that capacity with the organizer or administrator rather than applying a limit remembered from another account. During a computer meeting, Google’s Companion guidance directs you to the People icon at the bottom right to check the current participant count. Compare that count with the expected connection plan before a large audience arrives.

Reduce unnecessary connections deliberately

If capacity is tight, decide which people need individual chat or activity access and which extra connections are no longer required. Ask participants to leave unused sessions through their own controls. Do not remove an unfamiliar entry solely because a presenter appears twice: Google explains that a Companion presenter can have separate person and presentation entries for independent control. If the event requires more capacity than the account permits, arrange an eligible meeting format in advance. Companion mode is a collaboration tool, not a method for bypassing the meeting’s participant limit.
