Google Meet can select an unintended camera when a laptop, external webcam, and docking system expose several devices. Check the preview before joining so you know which view will be transmitted. Changing the selected camera is different from applying a background effect or adjusting video resolution.
Choose the camera in the green room
Open the meeting but remain on its pre-join screen. Use the camera device selector beneath the preview tile, or open settings and choose the video section. Select the intended camera by name and inspect the resulting picture. A device appearing in the list does not guarantee that another application has released it.
Check the actual scene
Confirm framing, lighting, and any private information visible behind you. If the selected camera produces a black preview, check its privacy shutter, connection, browser permission, and whether another application is using it. Close another camera application only after saving any work in progress. Do not repeatedly enable different permissions without identifying which layer is failing.
Verify after joining or moving devices
Join with the camera state you intend. Meet also provides a camera selector during a meeting, so a hardware change does not necessarily require leaving the call. Recheck the transmitted view after moving a laptop or reconnecting a webcam. Your self-preview is useful evidence of the selected scene, but it does not prove the quality received by every participant. Ask for a brief confirmation if orientation or clarity matters for a demonstration. Keep the physical shutter closed when the camera is not needed, especially on shared or unattended computers.
