Google Password Manager Shows Passwords From the Wrong Account: Check the Storage Location

2026年11月4日 by wisechecker

A saved password can belong to a different Google Account or to the device rather than the account you currently have open in Gmail. Identify where the entry is stored before moving, editing, or deleting it.

Check the Password Manager identity

Open Google Password Manager through Chrome or the account’s known password-management page. Confirm the Google Account shown there. A browser can have several profiles, and the Gmail account visible in a tab is not necessarily the account selected for browser password storage.

Inspect the website and username on the specific saved entry. A password for a work service and a password for your Google Account can appear in the same manager; neither should be identified solely by a familiar display name.

Distinguish local storage from account storage

Google’s Chrome guidance distinguishes passwords saved to your Google Account from passwords stored locally when Chrome is not signed in. A local entry does not automatically appear on a new device merely because you signed in to Gmail there.

On Android, saving a credential can include a choice of Google Account. Review that choice when several accounts are present. An entry saved under an unintended account may explain the mismatch without any password being changed at the website.

Correct storage only after verifying the credential

Confirm which website account the username and password actually access. Use the website’s established sign-in route and avoid repeated guesses that could lock the account. If a credential must be moved between approved storage locations, use Google’s supported management or import workflow and keep exported copies protected.

Do not delete the only working entry before confirming an authorized replacement. Editing the stored password is separate from changing the website’s real password, and deleting an entry does not close that website account. Keep work and personal credentials in the storage arrangement required by your organization.
