How to Turn a Gmail Message Into a Google Task

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

Creating a Google Task from a Gmail message gives you a personal follow-up item associated with that email. It is different from replying, assigning a shared support ticket, or scheduling a Calendar meeting.

Create the task from the right message

On a computer, open Gmail under the intended account and open the message. Choose Add to Tasks from the toolbar. If it is not visible, use More, Add to Tasks.

You can also open Tasks in Gmail’s right side panel and drag the email into it. If the panel is hidden, use Show side panel at the bottom right. Check the account before creating the item, especially when several work and personal accounts are open.

Make the follow-up actionable

Review the task title and add the actual action you need to take. Add details, a date, or a time where appropriate, and select the intended task list. A vague email subject is not always a useful reminder.

Inspect any associated message link and verify it opens the expected email in the correct account. Do not copy confidential message text into a different account’s task list to work around an access restriction.

Keep task completion separate from email actions

Marking the task complete records your to-do state. Do not assume that it sends a reply, archives the email, or tells the sender their request is finished. Handle those actions separately and verify them when needed.

For shared work, use a supported assignment workflow rather than assuming a personal Gmail-created task is visible to colleagues. If Add to Tasks is missing in a delegated inbox, check Google’s delegation limitations. If the item seems absent later, inspect the same Google Account and task list before creating another copy. Preserve the original message until the follow-up no longer needs it or your retention policy permits its removal.
