Google Workspace Alias Does Not Receive Mail: Check the Address Assignment

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

A Google Workspace alias delivers into its assigned user’s existing mailbox. If mail to an alias is missing, verify the administrator’s address assignment before trying to sign in to the alias as if it were a separate account.

Confirm the exact alias and owner

An administrator with the appropriate user-management privilege should open the intended user’s record in Directory, Users and inspect alternate email addresses. Check the spelling and domain, including whether the address is a user alias or comes from a domain alias.

An alias can be assigned to one user and is not a Google Account of its own. It cannot be created using an address already occupied by another account. A similarly named group is another separate object.

Test receipt in the primary mailbox

Sign in as the assigned user’s primary address and search for a harmless test sent to the alias. Check Spam, filters, and archived mail rather than looking for an alias-specific inbox that does not exist.

Google says alias changes can take up to 24 hours, although they often happen sooner. Record the assignment time and retain the sender’s bounce or message identifier. An administrator can use Email Log Search where available to distinguish rejection, routing, and delivery.

Separate receiving from sending configuration

Creating the alias routes incoming mail, but sending from it involves the user’s supported Send mail as configuration. A successful outgoing test therefore does not by itself prove the incoming alias assignment is correct.

Do not create another mailbox, change all domain MX records, or enable a catch-all just to repair one alias without evidence. If the entire domain has a delivery issue, investigate that separately. Confirm the destination and authorization before moving an old employee’s alias, because future confidential messages will reach the new owner. Record the narrow change and verify both the primary address and alias afterward.
