If Google Contacts are missing on a phone, compare the Google Contacts website with the phone’s own Contacts app. Gmail’s ability to read email does not prove that the operating system is synchronizing the same account’s contacts.
Check the cloud record and phone account filter
Open Google Contacts on the web and confirm the intended address. Search for a specific missing person. If that person is absent there too, investigate the source account or a deletion rather than the phone’s sync.
In the phone’s Contacts app, review which accounts or lists are displayed. A local, iCloud, work-profile, or different Google account can hold a separate set. A combined view can also make separate records look duplicated.
Enable the relevant contact synchronization
On current iPhone versions, Google’s guidance uses Settings, Apps, Contacts, then account controls to add or inspect the Google Account. Choose the information to synchronize and open Contacts to start syncing. Older versions place these controls differently.
On Android, inspect the intended Google Account’s contact-sync setting and the Contacts app’s selected account. Keep the connection secure. For a managed device or organizational directory, follow the organization’s supported synchronization method rather than adding work data to a personal store.
Separate contact access from contact sync
Permission for Gmail to access the iPhone’s device contacts controls what Gmail can use while composing. It is separate from synchronizing Google Contacts into Apple’s Contacts app. Review the setting that matches the actual symptom.
Create no new copies until you know which source is authoritative. Repeated imports can multiply records. If you eventually need to remove and re-add an account, preserve local-only contacts and other unsynchronized work first. Record the missing contact’s source, selected accounts, and whether edits made on the website reach the phone; that establishes which direction of synchronization is failing.
