Gmail Makes No Sound Even Though Notifications Appear: Check Silent Modes and Alert Settings

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

If Gmail notifications appear but make no sound, mail delivery and basic alert permission are already working. Inspect the sound path and silent modes rather than changing account synchronization or forwarding.

Check the sound selected for email

In Gmail’s notification settings, inspect the sound for the relevant account and email category. A selection of None intentionally keeps alerts silent. Chat and email can use different sound settings.

For desktop Gmail, Settings includes Mail notification sounds alongside Desktop notifications. Save any change and test with a new message that meets the chosen notification level.

Review device silence and notification categories

On iPhone, check the silent state, notification volume, Gmail’s Sounds permission, and the active Focus. Apple notes that notification sounds do not play when the phone is silenced or its volume is fully down.

On Android, inspect the specific notification category for that Gmail alert. A category marked Silent can still put the notification in the shade. Check notification volume rather than assuming media volume controls the alert. Manufacturer settings vary.

Run a controlled audible test

Choose a short built-in tone and test one new email with the phone in a known state. Note any connected audio device and whether other app alerts are audible. On supported Android versions, notification cooldown can reduce repeated sounds during a burst.

If you want Gmail to interrupt a Focus or do-not-disturb mode, use that mode’s specific allow rules where supported; do not assume every Gmail alert qualifies for special emergency treatment. If sound remains absent only for one account or category, capture those settings and the device version for support. Avoid reinstalling Gmail or deleting account data for a problem that is already narrowed to audio presentation. Keep visual alerts enabled while adjusting the sound.
