A Gmail icon badge or Android notification dot is not a universal, cross-platform total of every unread message in every folder. Compare the account and view behind the number before changing message states.
Establish which count you are comparing
In Gmail, select one account and inspect its inbox. Then use unread search or the relevant label to identify unread mail in the scope you care about. The combined All inboxes view, an individual inbox, and all unread messages across the mailbox are different sets.
Also check whether the number appears on Gmail’s app icon, an individual widget, or a notification group. Those displays can use different information and should not automatically be expected to match.
Review device-specific badge behavior
On iPhone, inspect Gmail’s notification and badge permission in iOS Settings. On Android, check the app’s notification-dot or badge settings and your launcher or manufacturer’s guidance. Some Android launchers display dots rather than mailbox counts.
Clearing a notification is not the same as marking its message read. Conversely, reading mail on another device may require synchronization before every local display catches up. Open the correct Gmail account and refresh before declaring a count permanently wrong.
Correct the display without erasing mail
Update Gmail and compare a single new test message as it arrives and is read. Note whether the app’s own unread state changes while the icon remains stale. Restarting the app or phone can be a later, reversible display check.
Do not mark all messages read, delete an inbox, or clear app storage simply to force an icon to zero. Those actions can remove useful state without explaining the discrepancy. If the mismatch persists, record the device, launcher, OS and Gmail versions, accounts involved, and exact views compared. Avoid claiming a particular badge-count formula unless the documentation for that platform actually specifies it.
