If the Gmail app crashes or freezes on iPhone, protect unsent work before reinstalling it. Mail confirmed on Google’s server is different from a draft or queued message that exists only inside the app. A reinstall should not be the first test when you have an important unfinished message.
Record the failure and preserve what you can
Note whether Gmail closes at launch, while opening one message, during attachment selection, or after switching accounts. If the app stays open long enough, save the draft and verify that it appears in the same account’s webmail. Copy essential unsent text to an appropriate secure location if it has not synchronized.
Keep a working browser session available. Do not repeatedly reopen a suspicious attachment just to reproduce a crash, and do not assume a device backup guarantees recovery of every unsent email or app-specific item.
Try Apple’s smaller troubleshooting steps
- Close and reopen Gmail, then test the action that failed.
- Restart the iPhone and check Gmail again.
- Check the App Store for a Gmail update and install applicable supported iOS updates.
Also compare the same mailbox in webmail. If sending or receiving fails there too, investigate the account or service separately; an app reinstall cannot fix every delivery or storage problem. A successful launch alone does not establish that the original crashing action is repaired.
Reinstall only after checking the consequences
Apple warns that deleting an app can lose data stored in it. Before removing Gmail, preserve local-only work and confirm that you can complete the account’s sign-in and second step. Removing the account through Gmail is also a separate action that affects other Google apps’ sessions on the device.
If you reinstall from the official App Store, test the original action, a new incoming message, and the preserved draft afterward. Avoid unofficial app packages, factory resets, and disabling account protection. Persistent crashes should be reported with the device model, iOS and Gmail versions, and a description that excludes confidential message contents.
