If Gmail is absent from Android’s Share menu, check the content and the type of action first. Sharing a file, opening a file, and following an email-address link use different mechanisms. Making Gmail a default email handler does not guarantee it appears for every shared item.
Compare a simple supported share
- Confirm Gmail is installed, enabled, and opens normally.
- Use a harmless small file or ordinary text from a trusted app.
- Open the system Share control and inspect the full app list where offered.
- Compare with the specific app or file that failed.
If Gmail appears for a normal file but not for one service’s content, that service may be exposing a different share type, restricted item, or custom chooser. It is not automatically a Gmail account failure.
Check content access and profiles
Android’s documented sharing model depends on the content type and the receiving app’s access to the shared data. A cloud-only item, unavailable file, or provider permission can affect what the receiving app can use.
Work-profile policy can also restrict sharing between managed and personal apps. Use the authorized profile rather than moving confidential work material into a personal Gmail draft.
Use Gmail’s own attachment workflow when appropriate
Open Gmail, compose a harmless draft, and use Attach to select the approved file through its picker. If that works, report the source app’s sharing behavior separately.
Check that the file is actually available and within the relevant sending constraints. Do not rename a blocked executable, disable scanning, or upload private content to an unknown conversion site to make a share target appear.
Update the affected apps through their official stores. Record the source app, file type, device, profile, and whether other share targets work for support.
Avoid clearing all Gmail storage or granting every permission as a first fix. Preserve any draft already created by a partial share attempt, and inspect the selected account and attachment before sending. A visible share target is only the start of composition, not proof of successful delivery.
