When Gmail on Android cannot attach a photo or file, identify which picker and storage location you are using. A permission issue, cloud file that has not downloaded, upload failure, and blocked file type require different remedies. Do not grant every device permission indiscriminately.
Use the attachment type that matches the item
- Open the intended Gmail draft and check the account.
- Tap Attach.
- Choose the relevant offered source, such as Photos, Camera, Files, or Drive.
- Select a harmless known item to compare with the failing file.
The exact choices depend on the app and device. A file shown in a cloud provider’s picker may still need network access or authorization before Gmail can upload it.
Review only the necessary access
In Android Settings, Apps, Gmail, Permissions, inspect the access relevant to the action. Taking a new picture can require camera access; choosing an existing item can use a different system picker or scoped selection.
Do not assume every photo attachment requires unrestricted access to the whole library, Contacts, microphone, or location. Follow the actual prompt and use the least access that supports the intended task.
Separate selection from upload and delivery
After selection, check whether the attachment finishes uploading. Compare connection, available device storage, Google Account capacity, and the applicable attachment limits. A Drive link also requires the recipient to have suitable file access.
For a work-profile app, use approved work storage and ask the administrator about restricted cross-profile sharing. Do not copy work files into personal storage as an improvised workaround.
Gmail blocks certain dangerous attachment types. Preserve that protection rather than changing file extensions or disabling security.
If the draft contains important unsent text, preserve it before any app reset. Provide support with the file type, size, source picker, error, and device, without disclosing the private file unnecessarily. A successful file selection is not the same as completed upload or successful delivery, so verify each stage with harmless content.
