Making Gmail the default email handler on Android concerns which app opens an email-composition request. It does not automatically move other providers’ mail into Gmail or choose the sender for every app-specific workflow. Android menus vary, and not every device exposes a universal Email category.
Test an ordinary email link
Use a harmless, trusted email-address link that opens a mailto: composition. If Android asks which app to use, select Gmail. Choose Always only if you want that default; Just once is useful while testing.
Check the resulting account, From address, recipients, and draft before sending anything. Do not test with a sensitive message or an unfamiliar payment link.
Review existing default choices
- Open the device’s Settings and Apps.
- Inspect Default apps for any applicable email choice.
- If another app already handles the action, inspect that app’s Open by default controls.
- Clear only the relevant default preference where supported, then repeat the harmless action.
Google’s Pixel guide documents default selection and clearing, but manufacturers can organize these controls differently. Do not invent a mandatory Email menu that your device does not provide.
Separate defaults from sharing and account setup
A website’s own contact form or a different app’s built-in messaging screen may not use Android’s default email handler. The system Share menu is also a separate mechanism and can offer several targets.
If you want to use a non-Google address inside Gmail, add that supported account separately through its provider’s sign-in flow. Choosing Gmail as a handler does not authorize access to another mailbox.
For managed devices, work-profile and personal-profile apps can have different allowed defaults. Ask the administrator rather than moving work content to a personal profile to force a choice.
After changing the relevant preference, verify an ordinary email link and cancel the harmless draft. Avoid resetting every app preference or removing accounts merely to change one action. The goal is a predictable handler for supported composition requests, not a guarantee that every email-related button everywhere launches Gmail.
