A stalled Gmail mail import needs checking the job, source access, and actual coverage before restarting it. A slow transfer, a rejected source connection, and a completed import with excluded messages are different outcomes. Preserve the source mailbox while investigating.
Identify the operation and status
Confirm whether you started a one-time import or are using the legacy continuous POP-fetching feature. Google’s current change notice treats those differently. Do not try to revive a retiring connection by following an old setup screen indiscriminately.
Inspect the relevant Gmail Accounts and import status and any error details. Record the source account, start time, and messages already transferred before starting another job.
Check the source and representative messages
- Verify the source provider’s webmail access.
- Check the supported authentication and secure retrieval requirements.
- Review source folders, size or format exclusions, and available destination storage.
- Search Gmail broadly and expand conversations for known examples.
Imported messages can be grouped or labeled differently, so a row count alone is not a complete audit. Compare specific dates, attachments, and contact details against the source.
Resume only the necessary work
If authentication failed, use the provider’s current supported process or administrator assistance. Do not turn off 2-Step Verification, enable obsolete less-secure access, or delete source messages merely because an older troubleshooting page suggests a broad workaround.
If the job is still processing, avoid overlapping restarts. If it finished with gaps, determine the excluded set before choosing a targeted re-import or another approved migration method.
Keep errors and sample message identifiers private for support. Do not upload the entire mailbox to an unknown repair service. A one-time import also does not guarantee that future incoming mail will continue transferring; arrange that separately.
After a justified correction, verify coverage again using the same sample set. Keep the source and a usable archive until the intended mail and contacts are accounted for, rather than treating the disappearance of an error banner as completion.
