If Gmail uses the wrong From address, inspect both the account’s default sender and the actual composition. Reply behavior and Reply-to settings can also affect the result. Changing a display name alone does not change the sending address.
Inspect the message before sending
- Open the draft and expand the From line.
- Confirm the signed-in account and selected address.
- Check whether the composition is a new message or a reply.
- Choose the intended verified address and inspect all recipients.
A mobile app containing several accounts can start a draft under a different account than expected. A combined inbox is a view, not a universal sender identity.
Review defaults on the web
Open Settings, See all settings, then Accounts and import or Accounts. In Send mail as, review which address is marked as default and the reply-related choices available for the account.
Google separately documents Reply-to settings through Edit info. If you change only From, replies can still go to a different default address. Decide where replies should arrive and verify that mailbox’s access.
Test the recipient’s actual result
Use harmless mail to a trusted recipient. Ask them to inspect the full sender and reply destination, not only the friendly name. Some clients can display an underlying Gmail address or an on-behalf-of relationship.
If an automated responder, template, or application is involved, inspect that workflow separately. A default chosen for ordinary web compositions should not be assumed to control every external sending system.
Keep ownership and support conditions in mind. Google’s announced January 2027 change affects third-party Send as addresses differently from other Gmail addresses and Workspace aliases, so an unsupported future sender should not be made the foundation of a new workflow.
Do not send private material as a test or delete a working address before documenting its current role. After changing defaults, inspect both a new message and a reply. Successful From selection and correct reply routing are two separate checks.
