Activity visible after you pause saving is not automatically evidence that Google ignored the change. The entry may predate the pause, belong to another account, or be controlled by a different history setting. Check the item before deleting more data or changing unrelated privacy controls.
Compare the entry with the change you made
- Open the item’s details and compare its date, product, and account with the setting you changed.
- Confirm whether you selected a pause-only option or an option that also deletes existing activity.
- Reload the page while online. A view on an offline device may not yet reflect changes made elsewhere.
If the entry is older than the pause, remove it separately if that is your intention. Pausing is a prospective setting. Avoid using All time deletion as a test: it can remove useful history without identifying why a particular item appeared.
Check which control actually covers the product
Google is rolling out separate Search Services History settings. If that control appears in your account, review it when investigating Search or Maps history; Web & App Activity alone may no longer be the relevant switch. If the new settings have not reached your account, the affected Search history and recommendations remain under Web & App Activity.
YouTube History and Maps Timeline also have separate controls. Browser history is another record again. Turning off Timeline does not prevent every use of location information: a search or another activity setting may still include location-related context.
Check another signed-in account or device
With multiple Google Accounts open, activity can be saved to the default account rather than the one you expected. Inspect the profile menu on the service you used and on My Activity. A work account’s available controls may also differ from a personal account’s controls.
For a genuinely new entry that appears inconsistent with the displayed setting, keep a private note of the time, product, selected account, and setting status. Use Google’s relevant help or feedback route with those details. Do not post an unredacted activity screenshot, and do not assume that an unfamiliar entry alone proves an account compromise.
