When Gmail automatic forwarding does not work, check verification, activation, message scope, and the destination’s result separately. A verified address can exist without forwarding being enabled, and a successful source delivery does not prove the forwarded copy reached the other Inbox.
Inspect the source settings
- Open the correct source account on the web.
- Review the Forwarding or Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- Confirm the intended destination is verified and selected for active forwarding.
- Check that changes were saved.
If you use a forwarding filter instead, test its exact conditions. A reply is affected only if it matches the rule itself. Do not expect a narrow filter to forward every message in an existing conversation.
Use a new harmless message
Google’s general automatic forwarding applies to new incoming mail and excludes Spam. An old message already in the source mailbox is not a suitable test of a newly enabled forwarding route.
Ask a trusted sender to deliver one test after setup. Note its time and verify where it appears at the source, then search the destination’s Spam, categories, archive, and relevant rules.
Trace destination rejection or competing routes
Check whether the destination is full, rejects forwarded mail, or sends it through organizational review. Forwarding can complicate authentication, so a mail administrator may need the actual headers and failure notice.
Review other forwarding rules and source-copy settings to understand unexpected copies or movement. Do not enable both an all-mail route and several overlapping filters without a clear purpose.
For managed work or school mail, ask the administrator about approved forwarding policy rather than routing sensitive content through an unapproved personal account.
Do not weaken authentication, disable spam protection, or remove every filter just to make one example arrive. Correct the demonstrated cause, repeat a controlled test, and retain the source mailbox until the destination workflow is reliable. Forwarding is not a complete historical migration or a guarantee that all future mail is safe and deliverable.
