Gmail’s ordinary received-message controls do not provide a general built-in detach-and-keep-the-original workflow for removing only an attachment from a stored email. Downloading the file, removing it from a new reply, and deleting the original message are different actions.
Distinguish the original from a new composition
The Remove attachment control in a reply or forward affects the message you are composing. It does not retroactively remove the file from the email already stored in your mailbox or the copies previously delivered to others.
Likewise, saving an attachment to your device or Drive does not delete it from the original. The email can continue to occupy storage until you take a separate action affecting that stored message.
Choose what information must be preserved
- Decide whether you need the complete original, including its headers and context.
- Save required files to an approved location.
- Preserve the original message through a suitable archive or export if necessary.
- Verify the saved content before considering deletion.
If the complete original must remain in Gmail, retaining it and managing capacity elsewhere may be the appropriate choice. Forwarding text to yourself without an attachment creates a different message, not an unchanged original record.
Assess cleanup tools carefully
Third-party software may advertise attachment removal by creating replacement copies or performing mailbox operations. Do not assume it preserves every header, label, date, or recovery option. Broad mailbox permissions introduce another access decision.
For a reviewed storage cleanup, you can preserve an independent copy and then delete the original only when that is permitted and genuinely intended. Ordinary Trash and direct permanent deletion through a storage manager have different recovery consequences.
Copying the file into Drive may still consume the same shared Google quota. It is not automatically a net storage saving. Avoid modifying or replacing records solely to reduce a storage number, especially for organizational mail. Keep the preservation requirement explicit rather than presenting a reconstructed attachment-free message as the original email.
