When Gmail will not send a message, first establish whether it is still a draft, queued on a device, present in Sent, or followed by a delivery failure. Those states are different. Keep the message available and avoid pressing Send repeatedly before checking what happened.
Locate the message and error
- Check Drafts and Outbox in the app that composed it.
- Compare Gmail on the web in the same account.
- Look in Sent for an actual submitted copy.
- Check for a bounce or delayed-delivery notice and read its specific reason.
A message in Outbox may be waiting for a connection or synchronization. A message in Sent may still fail at the recipient’s server. Neither state should be described simply as delivered.
Follow the relevant branch
For a local queue, check connection, account authorization, app synchronization, and any attachment still uploading. For a bounce, inspect the recipient address, capacity, policy, and error text. For a sending-limit notice, identify the account and sending method before retrying.
Check account-level storage if Gmail reports it is full. Free space on the device is a separate issue. A blocked attachment or organization policy also requires a different response from an ordinary temporary connection failure.
Use one controlled retry after the cause is addressed
For harmless test mail, verify a single new attempt and compare Sent and the recipient’s result. Before resending an important original, determine whether its queued copy could still transmit automatically.
Use an approved alternative channel when a deadline cannot wait. Do not disable verification, weaken encryption, rename blocked files to evade checks, or split a mass mailing into repeated bursts to circumvent limits.
If support is needed, provide the account type, client, exact error, time, and whether the issue affects one recipient or every message. Preserve local drafts before removing the account or clearing app storage. This overview directs the investigation; it does not replace the specific queue, bounce, authentication, and limit checks for the state you actually observed.
