Ordinary Gmail search does not include Spam and Trash by default. Add in:anywhere when you need to search those areas as well. This broadens discovery without moving, restoring, or marking the results safe.
Run an account-wide search
Try in:anywhere from:alex@example.com or combine the operator with a distinctive subject phrase. Replace the illustrative address with the sender you actually expect.
You can also open Show search options and choose the search scope that includes Mail, Spam, and Trash. If no result appears, remove uncertain conditions one at a time. A wrong date or guessed subject can exclude the message you need.
Inspect the result’s location before restoring it
- Open the correct individual message and check whether it is in Spam or Trash.
- Verify the sender and context independently if the content is sensitive.
- For legitimate spam-filtered mail, use Not spam only after that review.
- For mistakenly deleted mail still in Trash, move it to an appropriate location.
Finding mail with in:anywhere does not mean every warning was mistaken. Leave suspicious links and attachments untouched and use Gmail’s reporting controls when appropriate.
Understand what the search cannot recover
Messages permanently removed from Trash or Spam are not restored by widening a search. Google’s standard guidance describes automatic permanent deletion after 30 days in those locations, with manual permanent deletion possible sooner.
All Mail is also not a synonym for every storage location including Spam and Trash. Use the explicit search scope when that distinction matters. If the message never arrived, the search cannot make it appear; ask the sender for the recipient address, sending time, and any bounce notice.
Do not turn an account-wide result set into a bulk safe-sender action or deletion without careful review. It can intentionally include dangerous mail and messages you already discarded. Save a narrower search for routine work rather than placing unreviewed Spam results into an ordinary action queue.
