Search is:unread to find unread Gmail messages beyond the currently visible inbox section. A label is a classification, so one unread message carrying several labels is not several independent unread copies. Check the search scope and conversation grouping when counts differ.
Choose the unread scope you need
is:unreadsearches unread mail in the ordinary search scope.in:inbox is:unreadnarrows the result to Inbox.label:Action is:unreadfocuses on an existing Action label.in:anywhere is:unreadalso includes Spam and Trash.
Use the last query only when those locations belong in your investigation. Unread spam is not automatically legitimate work waiting for a reply.
Inspect the unread message inside a thread
With conversation view on, a result row may contain several messages. Open it and locate the unread reply rather than assuming every message in the conversation is unread.
If the row disappears after you open it, it may simply have become read and stopped matching. Search its sender or subject without the unread condition to find it again. Read state can also change through another synchronized client or an automatic filter.
Use unread as a review state, not a task guarantee
Marking a message unread can remind you to revisit it, but it does not undo a read receipt, recall a sent email, or notify the sender. A message can be read and still require urgent action.
For reliable follow-up, use a deliberate label, star, task, or calendar reminder. When marking a large group read, inspect whether Gmail selected the current page or every matching conversation before applying the action.
If you are trying to reconcile a badge, compare the same account and scope in both places. A phone’s notification count, a label’s unread badge, and a conversation-row count can differ without any delivery failure. Do not delete messages or recreate labels solely to make those numbers equal.
