Gmail’s display density controls how tightly messages are arranged in the web inbox. It is different from browser zoom, font size, and the reading pane. Change one display control at a time so you can tell which setting improved readability or restored an attachment preview.
Choose a web display density
- Open Gmail on a computer and click Settings.
- In Quick settings, find Density.
- Try Default, Comfortable, or Compact.
- Compare the same inbox messages after each choice.
Google notes that Default shows attachment previews in the inbox. A tighter layout can make the list look different without removing files from the messages. Open a known email to confirm an attachment still exists before treating a missing list preview as a file-loss problem.
Separate previews from the reading pane
An attachment chip or snippet in a message row is not the same as the reading pane, which displays message content beside or below the list. If you want to read mail without leaving the list, configure Reading pane in the Inbox settings instead.
Browser zoom changes the size of the whole page and how much horizontal space Gmail has. If buttons or columns seem squeezed, check the browser’s current zoom before repeatedly switching density. Do not use an extremely small scale simply to fit more messages if it makes controls hard to distinguish.
Verify comfort and action accuracy
Check that sender names, subjects, and action icons remain easy to read. Try selecting one harmless message and verify that you can distinguish Archive from Delete. Compact spacing is not an improvement if it increases mistaken actions.
Phone apps have their own layouts and do not necessarily expose the computer’s three density choices. A web density change is not a universal device setting. If only one received message has unreadable text or a wide table, investigate that message’s design separately; inbox spacing cannot repair the sender’s HTML, enlarge an attachment’s contents, or change the words in a message.
