If Gmail messages become read without you opening them deliberately, another client, a reading pane, or an automatic rule may be changing their state. This symptom alone does not prove account theft. Compare where and when the change happens before removing access or changing several settings at once.
Observe one harmless test message
- Ask a trusted contact to send a clearly named test message.
- Check Gmail in a computer browser and note whether it arrives unread.
- Temporarily close your own other mail clients, then watch whether the read state changes when you reopen one of them.
A preview or reading pane can display a message without opening a separate page. Check that client’s read-marking behavior as well as Gmail’s reading-pane settings. Avoid experimenting with sensitive incoming messages or a shared operational mailbox without coordinating with its other users.
Check rules and authorized access
In Gmail’s Filters and blocked addresses settings, review rules containing Mark as read. A filter can change a new matching message immediately, so a message may never appear unread in your normal view.
Consider Outlook, Apple Mail, mobile apps, delegates, and third-party services that are authorized to manage mail. Read-state changes can synchronize with the mailbox. Do not assume a browser extension is responsible merely because it is installed; isolate the cause using one test at a time.
Respond proportionately to the evidence
Correct an identified filter or client setting, then repeat the same test. Mark a few affected messages unread if you need them as reminders; this does not reverse a receipt or a person’s earlier access.
If you find an unfamiliar device, delegate, forwarding destination, or app authorization, review your Google Account security using a trusted route. Remove access you do not recognize and secure the account. Preserve relevant timestamps and screenshots before escalation. Do not disconnect every legitimate client or clear app data as an initial fix, because that can interrupt work and put unsynchronized drafts at risk.
