How to Share a Gmail Attachment With Someone Who Does Not Use Google

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

A recipient does not always need a Gmail mailbox to receive a file from you. The required access depends on whether you send an ordinary file attachment, a restricted Drive link, a permitted public link, or an organization-enabled visitor invitation.

Use a suitable ordinary attachment when appropriate

For an approved file within the sending limit, an ordinary attachment is delivered through email. The recipient needs an application that can open its format, but it is not a private Drive resource requiring your Google sign-in.

Confirm the recipient’s address and sharing authority first. Sending a copy means the recipient can retain it independently; later deleting the original or restricting a Drive folder does not retrieve that copy.

Distinguish a non-Gmail address from no Google Account

Someone can use a Google Account associated with an existing non-Gmail email address. For a restricted Drive share, check the identity that actually receives permission and opens the link. An email forwarded to another person does not necessarily transfer access.

Where organizational policy permits it, visitor sharing is a separate option for people without Google Accounts. Google’s current guidance supports eligible files and uses an email verification PIN. Visitor access lasts seven days after verification and can be renewed through the original invitation when continuing collaboration is allowed.

Avoid turning private sharing into public distribution

Anyone with the link may permit access without a Google Account, but that is a different access boundary. Use it only when the information is approved for that exposure. Organization restrictions can prevent this choice, and the owner may need to authorize the alternative.

Do not tell a recipient to use your credentials, and do not confuse a Drive visitor with an organization’s separately managed Guest account. Follow the exact invitation and verification flow for the enabled service.

Before relying on the arrangement, verify that the intended recipient can open the file with the required role. If they cannot, provide the owner or administrator with the exact access error. Choose an approved transfer route instead of repeatedly sending the same unusable link.
