A hyperlink in Gmail can show descriptive text while opening a different underlying address. Add the link deliberately, then check both parts before sending. A familiar-looking label alone does not prove the destination is correct.
Insert the link in the computer composer
- Open the intended draft and type the words you want the reader to select.
- Highlight those words.
- Choose Insert link, or use the supported link shortcut.
- Enter the intended full destination address in the link dialog.
- Apply the change and inspect the resulting link.
Google’s formatting guide describes Ctrl+K for the link dialog, with platform-specific shortcuts covered in its accessibility instructions. The dialog distinguishes a web address from an email destination, so confirm that you are creating the correct type of link.
Check the actual target
Inspect or reopen the link’s edit controls and read the complete destination. Watch for a mistyped domain, an outdated page, or a link copied from an unrelated browser tab. Descriptive text should accurately tell the reader what to expect.
For an address you trust and are authorized to open, verify that it reaches the intended resource. Do not test an unknown or suspicious link merely because it is present in someone else’s quoted email.
Review access and private information
A valid Drive or other document link can still require permission. Confirm the sharing audience for the intended recipients without making a private resource public just to avoid an access request.
A copied URL can contain a private invitation, temporary access token, or other sensitive information. Share only the link intended for that purpose. Avoid posting a complete private link in a public troubleshooting request.
Make the message understandable without styling
Use clear link text rather than an ambiguous instruction where the destination matters. In plain text mode, review the visible address because the same rich-text presentation may not be retained. For an important message, inspect the Sent copy or a non-sensitive test to confirm the intended link was included. Changing a web page later does not rewrite the wording already delivered in the email.
