Unexpected spacing in a Gmail draft often needs a focused review of pasted paragraphs, blank lines, lists, and quotes. Do not assume Gmail provides a word-processor-style global line-spacing setting or that changing the default font will repair every paragraph.
Identify where the extra space begins
Compare a short sentence typed directly into a fresh composer with the affected passage. If the fresh text is normal, inspect the copied content or existing draft rather than changing the browser’s whole display.
Keep an original copy before editing. Look for empty paragraphs, repeated blank lines, list indentation, and quote formatting. A space between paragraphs and a line that simply wraps because the window is narrow are different things.
Rebuild only the affected section
Select the troublesome passage and use Gmail’s supported remove-formatting command or paste a plain-text version into the intended location. Recreate the necessary paragraphs and lists deliberately.
Do not select the whole draft unless you intend to change all of it. Removing formatting can affect emphasis and other structure, so inspect links, numbering, and quotations afterward. If the edit damages the text, use Undo promptly and return to your preserved copy.
Keep the layout simple enough for email
Complex content copied from a document or website can depend on formatting that an email client handles differently. Prefer short paragraphs and simple lists when they communicate the same information. For a document whose exact layout matters, an appropriately shared document or attachment can be clearer than forcing the full design into the email body.
Check permissions and recipient needs before using a link or attachment. A document link is not a guarantee that the recipient has access.
Check the received result
Use a non-sensitive test and view it at a normal desktop and phone width. A recipient’s font, screen width, or plain-text mode can change wrapping. Do not add repeated spaces or blank lines just to align one screenshot; that can make the message less readable elsewhere. Describe any remaining issue by the source, composer, and receiving app instead of calling every spacing difference a Gmail malfunction.
