Gmail Text Changes Font After Pasting: Remove Unwanted Formatting

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

Text pasted into Gmail can bring fonts, colors, links, and paragraph formatting from the source. If only the pasted section looks wrong, remove or rebuild that section’s formatting instead of changing the default style for every new message.

Preserve the words before editing

Keep a copy of the original text in an appropriate private location. Select only the affected passage in the Gmail draft. A formatting command applied without the intended selection can change a different area or affect what you type next.

If you need a quotation to remain exact, check that cleanup does not remove meaningful words, numbers, or line breaks. Visual simplification is not permission to alter the original statement.

Remove unwanted rich-text styling

Gmail’s official keyboard guidance lists Ctrl+backslash on Windows and Command+backslash on Mac to remove formatting from selected text. Use the applicable supported command, then inspect the result.

Reapply a simple font, size, or emphasis through Formatting options if needed. Do not expect removing formatting to preserve every special layout, embedded object, or link exactly as it was. Check those elements separately.

Paste plain text when layout is unnecessary

Where your browser or editor offers a paste-without-formatting action, use it for material that only needs its words. Another option is to copy through an appropriate plain-text editor before inserting it into the draft.

Avoid public online text cleaners for confidential correspondence. Removing visual styling does not make private content safe to upload. It also does not verify the facts or remove every unwanted address hidden in the wording itself.

Review the outgoing message

Check font consistency, links, lists, indentation, and quoted text. A passage that looks correct in the composer can still wrap differently on another screen. For an important layout, use a non-sensitive test message before sending the final version.

If all newly typed text has the unwanted style, inspect the default text style and plain text mode instead. If the problem starts only after paste, focus on the source and selected passage rather than resetting all Gmail or browser settings.
