Gmail fills a reply’s recipients from the message you answer, but you can review and change that list before sending. Expand the recipient area instead of assuming a displayed name represents every destination.
Start from the correct original message
Open the intended message within the conversation and choose Reply or Reply all. These produce different initial recipient sets. Check the date and sender in a long thread so you do not answer an older message with a different audience.
If you already have a saved reply, reopen it from Drafts or the conversation. Starting another reply creates more opportunities to edit the wrong version.
Edit the actual address fields
- Expand or activate the recipient area at the top of the reply.
- Inspect the full To, Cc, and any Bcc addresses.
- Remove the recipient entry you do not want.
- Add a required address to the appropriate field and confirm the selected suggestion.
- Recheck the entire list before Send.
For keyboard access, focus a recipient entry and use the available contact and removal controls. Google’s screen-reader guide explains how to inspect a matched contact and remove a selected recipient. Do not rely on a short autocomplete name when more than one person shares it.
Check what a new recipient will receive
Adding someone to a reply can disclose the quoted history, attachments or links present in the outgoing content, and the other visible recipients. Review the collapsed history as well as your new text.
If the added person needs only a summary, write an appropriate new message instead of automatically forwarding the entire discussion. Bcc hides an address from other recipients; it does not prevent the person from reading or redistributing the contents.
Keep the change limited to this message
Editing a reply’s recipient list does not change the original sender’s stored message, a contact record, or membership of an external mailing list. Future replies can populate another list based on their own source message. After an important send, inspect the actual Sent message rather than assuming the last address edit became a permanent rule for the conversation.
