Google can offer a passkey first without removing your password. You can choose another sign-in method for the current attempt or change the account’s usual preference after signing in.
Use the password for this attempt
On Google’s legitimate sign-in flow, select Try another way when offered and follow the password route. Use the Google Account password, not the PIN used to unlock a device.
If 2-Step Verification applies, Google can still require the appropriate second step. Choosing a password is not a way to bypass an organization policy or a verification requirement.
Change the default preference
- Sign in to the intended Google Account.
- Open Security & sign-in.
- Under the sign-in options, find Skip password when possible.
- Turn that preference off if you want Google to ask for the password first.
- Check the saved setting and the next appropriate sign-in.
Google says passkeys can still be used as a second step when you are enrolled in 2-Step Verification. Changing the preference is different from deleting the passkey.
If the offered methods differ from expectations
Check the complete account address. A personal and a managed account may have different settings, and an administrator can control whether passwordless passkey sign-in is allowed.
Google also adapts the frequency of passkey offers when you repeatedly choose another method. A passkey appearing less often does not necessarily mean it has been removed.
Do not remove useful credentials unnecessarily
If your goal is only a password-first interface, keep a useful passkey and independent recovery methods in place. Removing every key can reduce your options when a phone is lost.
If the passkey belongs to a lost or shared device, however, review that credential and its sessions through the appropriate removal instructions. A display preference does not revoke unsafe access.
If you forgot the password too
A working passkey may let you access the account, but a password change can require additional verification. Follow the official account settings or recovery flow rather than attempting to reset the device’s PIN as a substitute. Those secrets serve different systems.
