A pending Google recovery-contact invitation is not yet an active recovery method. Check whether the recipient received it, accepted it using the intended account, and completed the required activation period.
Inspect the request in your account
Open Google Account Security & sign-in → Recovery contacts and review the invitation status. Confirm the full recipient address rather than relying on the contact’s display name.
Google says a request is valid for seven days. After that, it is no longer available for acceptance and you need a new request if you still want that person as a contact.
Ask the recipient to check the correct account
The recipient should look for the notification email and use its review process for a request they recognize. If they use several Google Accounts, they should verify which identity is handling the invitation.
Do not forward passwords, sign-in codes, or account-recovery links to “help” them accept. Agree on the request through a known channel and let the recipient complete their own legitimate acceptance flow.
Check eligibility and invitation limits
Child accounts cannot act as recovery contacts. Google’s guide also limits how many primary accounts a person can act for, counting pending and accepted invitations. If a request cannot be accepted, check the current eligibility rules and the message shown to the recipient.
The guide currently permits up to two resends per day if the recipient has not declined. After a decline, another request cannot be sent to that person for four days. Follow those limits rather than repeatedly sending invitations.
Acceptance is followed by a waiting period
Even after acceptance, Google requires another seven days before the contact can help with account recovery. A request that looks accepted but is not usable immediately may therefore be behaving as documented.
Retain an existing backup sign-in method while waiting. Do not remove your last working verification option on the assumption that the invitation itself is enough.
If the invitation was unexpected
A recipient who does not know the requester should disregard or decline it. Being asked to become a contact is not a reason to approve an unrelated sign-in prompt. If an invitation repeatedly fails, choose another suitable trusted person rather than an unknown online helper.
