How to Use a Google Recovery Contact When You Cannot Sign In

2026年10月27日 by wisechecker

A previously configured Google recovery contact may be offered as part of account recovery. The contact must already have accepted and passed the activation period; you cannot appoint somebody new after the lockout begins.

Confirm that the contact is ready

Google allows seven days for invitation acceptance, followed by another seven-day activation period. If the contact was only recently added, another recovery method may be needed.

The feature is not offered to every account. Use the choices on the account-recovery screen rather than expecting a contact option solely because another user has it.

Use the official matching-number flow

  1. Start Google’s recovery process for your own account.
  2. Select the previously configured recovery contact if offered.
  3. Choose Get number.
  4. Immediately contact that trusted person through a channel you know.
  5. Give them the matching number displayed for this recovery request.
  6. They select the corresponding number from the choices Google shows on their own device.

Google’s guide says the number expires in 15 minutes. If it expires, obtain a new one through the legitimate flow when offered or use another method.

Keep this exception narrowly defined

This is a specific matching-number procedure with the recovery contact you designated earlier. It is not permission to disclose ordinary SMS codes, Authenticator codes, backup codes, or passwords to a caller claiming to work for Google.

The contact should help only after confirming that you initiated the request. If they receive an unexplained prompt, they should contact you independently rather than approve it to clear the notification.

More verification may still be required

A successful contact match does not guarantee immediate restoration. Google says the account may enter a temporary security hold if further verification is needed. Read the resulting instructions and preserve the contact channel used for the request.

Once access returns, review account activity and recovery settings. If somebody used the contact route without your permission, secure the account promptly. A recovery contact assists with this recovery check; it does not replace ongoing security alerts or the need to maintain other appropriate sign-in methods.
