You can add an eligible non-Gmail address as another way to sign in to an existing Google Account. This does not import the other mailbox or create a second Google Account.
Check the address first
- You must own and be able to receive mail at the address.
- It cannot be a Gmail address for this alternate-email addition.
- It cannot already be linked to another Google Account.
- A work or school account may not offer the control.
If the address is already used to access Google services, identify that existing account before trying to attach it elsewhere. Deleting an account to free an address can sacrifice data and is not a sensible first troubleshooting step.
Add and verify the alternate
- Open the intended Google Account.
- Select Personal info → Email.
- Beside Alternate emails, select Add alternate email.
- Reauthenticate if asked, then enter the address and add it.
- Open the verification message in that mailbox and complete the verification link you requested.
Until you finish verification, do not rely on the address as a working sign-in option. Check spelling and the mailbox’s spam folder if the message is missing, and use Google’s resend guidance if needed.
Test the correct password
When signing in to Google with the alternate address, use the existing Google Account password. Your external email account’s password belongs to its own provider and is not interchangeable.
Confirm that the account you reach contains the expected Google data. The purpose is another route into one account, not an empty replacement account.
Know what other people may see
Google warns that sharing through services such as Docs or Calendar can reveal the primary Gmail address even when the alternate address was used. Do not use this feature when your requirement is to keep two identities entirely separate.
To remove an ordinary added alternate later, return to the alternate-email settings and use the removal control. Previous Gmail addresses retained after a Gmail rename follow different rules; do not assume this non-Gmail alternate-removal procedure can delete those.
