Google’s current troubleshooting guide describes the corresponding @gmail.com and @googlemail.com addresses as essentially the same for mail delivery. Messages to either domain version go to the same place. This does not mean you need to create a second account.
Check the identity already on your account
Open the Google Account profile menu and read the address shown. Then inspect Personal info → Email → Google Account email. Use the identity shown there when following account-specific instructions instead of assuming that the domain displayed on another person’s account should appear on yours.
The equivalence concerns the corresponding Gmail service addresses. It is not a rule that lets you substitute domains in an arbitrary company or school email address.
Receiving and sending are separate checks
For receiving, send a harmless test to the corresponding domain spelling of your own address and confirm delivery. Do not use another person’s address to test account ownership.
For the address displayed on outgoing messages, inspect Gmail’s Accounts and Import settings and the Send mail as choices. Google’s address-change troubleshooting guide points to those settings when users want to adjust the outgoing domain spelling.
Compose a fresh test message and check its From details after saving. Mail arriving in one inbox does not, by itself, prove that every outgoing identity or external site’s stored email has changed.
When changing the account’s primary address
Google says that if the account previously used a Googlemail address as its Google Account email, a newly chosen address through the rename feature will also use that domain. Do not repeatedly request new usernames just to change the domain shown in the account menu.
Be cautious with external websites
A website can store the exact email you entered for its own account. Mail delivery equivalence does not guarantee that the website treats both spellings as the same login. Try the spelling originally registered there, or use that website’s account-recovery procedure.
If you use Sign in with Google, confirm that the existing profile and its data open correctly. Creating another customer profile or disconnecting Google authorization can make a simple address-label issue harder to resolve.
