Dots and Plus Signs in Gmail Addresses: What They Change and What They Do Not

2026年10月27日 by wisechecker

Dots and plus tags can change how a personal Gmail address is written without creating a new inbox. They are useful for recognizing mail, but they do not provide a separate account or a secret identity.

Dots in a personal Gmail username

For an address ending in @gmail.com, Gmail ignores dots in the username for delivery. A dotted and undotted spelling of your own username reach the same account. Someone else cannot register a dotted variation of that personal Gmail username as a separate mailbox.

This rule is not universal for every domain hosted by Google. Google’s documentation explicitly distinguishes work, school, and other organization domains, where dots can change the address. Ask the administrator about those addresses.

Plus tags for incoming mail

You can append a plus sign and a label before @gmail.com, such as your-actual-username+receipts@gmail.com, substituting your real username. Messages sent to the tagged address arrive in the underlying mailbox.

Use a tag to identify a signup or build a mail filter. Start by applying a label rather than deleting messages automatically, and test with harmless mail. A receiving service’s form may not accept every address format, so confirm that the signup and any verification email actually work.

What these variations do not do

  • They do not create another Google Account or password.
  • They do not prevent somebody from recognizing the underlying address.
  • They do not guarantee that an external website treats two variations as the same customer.
  • They do not automatically make every tagged address a configured outgoing From address.

A plus sign is not allowed as part of a newly registered Gmail username. Using a plus tag on an existing mailbox is a different function.

Unexpected mail is not evidence of a dot collision

If somebody else’s messages arrive at a dotted version of your personal Gmail address, Gmail has not assigned the variation to another person. The sender or signup may have used the wrong underlying address. Avoid opening suspicious links or changing your password solely because of the dot spelling; inspect the message and report phishing when appropriate.
