Gmail uses your Google Account profile picture, but an old image can remain visible while updates propagate or because you are looking at another account. Start by identifying which picture is wrong and who sees it.
Check the selected identity
- Open Gmail and select the profile picture or initial.
- Read the full email address, especially when several accounts are signed in.
- Open that account’s Personal info → Profile picture.
- Check whether the saved picture there is the image you intended.
The Chrome profile icon and the Google Account image inside the web page are not interchangeable controls. A work browser profile can display one label while Gmail is showing a different signed-in account.
If the saved Google picture is wrong
Choose the intended image in the Google Account profile-picture flow, adjust the crop, then save it as the profile picture. Google’s Gmail guide offers choices such as an uploaded image, an illustration, a camera picture, or Google Photos where available.
If you have no profile image, initials are expected. Selecting a photo from Google Photos does not publish your entire photo library.
If the saved picture is correct but another view is old
Google says changes can take time to appear across products; its account-profile guide notes that this can sometimes take a few days. Check a newly loaded Gmail page or a new message before treating an old conversation as a reliable test.
If the discrepancy affects only one recipient or one contacts app, ask which account and contact record that view is displaying. Do not change your own contact information repeatedly merely to match a recipient’s local record.
Keep the scope of the change clear
Your Google profile image is used in several Google services. It is not a Gmail-only decoration. YouTube channel branding is managed separately, and changing your Google Account image does not automatically replace that channel image.
For a work or school account with restricted profile editing, contact the administrator. Avoid deleting the account, removing a browser profile, or clearing all browser data to refresh a picture: those operations have much broader consequences than the display problem being investigated.
