If Google Account email opens but does not offer a change button, first check the selected account and the type of address. A missing option is not a reason to delete Gmail, create a replacement account, or repeatedly change browser settings.
Find the setting for the intended account
- Open your Google Account and inspect the complete address beside the profile picture.
- Select Personal info → Email → Google Account email.
- Look for Change Google Account email within that section, rather than in Recovery email, Contact email, or Alternate emails.
- If several accounts are signed in, switch to the intended one and check again.
Google’s current instructions allow eligible personal Gmail accounts to change to another Gmail address. They also say that if the change option is unavailable, the address may not be changeable. The presence of the control for your account is more useful than another user’s screenshot.
Separate the different account situations
- Personal Gmail: use the options actually offered in Google Account email. Do not assume every account has identical availability.
- Work or school: ask the administrator about an address change. Consumer Gmail instructions do not override organization controls.
- Account using a non-Gmail address: changing that sign-in address or adding Gmail is a different process. Read the corresponding section of Google’s guide.
Changing the sender name in Gmail changes a display label, not the address. Adding an alternate email provides another eligible sign-in identity; it does not rename the Gmail mailbox.
What to do while the option is unavailable
If the goal is simply to display a different name, edit the sender or profile name instead. If it is to receive messages at another existing account, consider the separate mail-management options for those accounts without treating them as a rename.
Do not delete the Gmail service to force a Gmail-to-Gmail change. Deleting a service is a different, consequential operation. Keep using the current address unless Google offers a supported change for this account. A browser refresh can check whether a page loaded correctly, but cannot establish eligibility or remove a server-side limit.
