A Gmail username can be unavailable even when you cannot find anyone publicly using it. Google can reject names that are already used, too similar to existing names, previously used and deleted, or reserved for other reasons. The sign-up result is not a directory of account owners.
Read the rejection before changing the name
Separate an unavailable name from an invalid format. A format error concerns the characters or length you entered. An unavailable-name response means you need another permitted name, even if the original looked reasonable.
Use the current format guidance shown on Google’s username page. Do not copy the display name from a profile into the username field and assume spaces, punctuation, or decorative characters are accepted.
Choose a genuinely different address
For personal @gmail.com addresses, adding or removing dots does not create a separate mailbox. If alex.example@gmail.com belongs to someone, alexexample@gmail.com is not a different personal Gmail address that you can claim.
Try a meaningful word or another distinctive combination that you can comfortably give to other people. Check for accidental resemblance to a company or person you do not represent. Avoid embedding private identifiers simply to make the name unique.
A plus-address variant is also not a way to register an independent Gmail account. It is associated with an existing mailbox and should not be treated as a separate identity for ownership or recovery.
A deleted address is not an available address
Do not delete an existing account in the expectation that its address will become available for a replacement. Gmail does not make previously used usernames freely reusable simply because an account was deleted.
If the name was yours and you lost access, use account recovery. Creating an account with a similar name will not recover the old mailbox, purchases, or sign-ins at other services.
When the name matters for a business
If you need predictable addresses for a team, an organization-managed custom-domain service may be more appropriate than trying many variations of a consumer Gmail name. That is a separate setup decision and does not grant rights to an existing Gmail username.
Before finishing registration, read the complete proposed address carefully. A short test of how it sounds when spoken can catch confusing letters or numbers. Once the account is created, record the exact address and set up recovery information rather than relying on your memory of the display name.
