Codex

A ChatGPT plan and an API key are different routes. Verify the plan, supported client and usage dashboard before judging cost.

Check whether your plan includes the surface you need, what other activity shares its allowance, and whether API credentials change the billing route. Current plan notes are in the shared table below.

These are reference prices, not a checkout quote. Taxes, local currency, app-store billing, eligibility and promotions can change the amount you pay. Annual equivalents and API charges are not mixed into this table.

Not every row provides the same coding surface. In the checker, “terminal coding agent” excludes chat-only coding help and a limited desktop-only entry route.

Claude Max: API credits have separate eligibility rules

Max 5x and 20x offer $100 and $200 in monthly API credits respectively. They do not cover interactive Claude Code or subscription extra usage, and do not reset plan limits.

What to do: An eligible active plan needs seven days before claiming. Check Console-linking roles and eligible API/SDK uses; unused credits expire each billing cycle. Do not subtract credits from the fee.

A credit's face value is not automatically a discount on your subscription. Confirm the eligible work, claim process and expiry. A token-dollar session estimate is also not necessarily your subscription bill. Claude Code: costs and usage display

A small, repeatable comparison you can trust

  1. Choose a bounded task. Use a known bug, a small interface change or a test gap. Write acceptance checks before starting.
  2. Make the starting state identical. Use separate clean working copies, the same instructions and the same allowed files and tools.
  3. Record the actual configuration. Note agent version, model, reasoning or speed settings, permission level and sign-in method.
  4. Set a resource limit. Stop both trials at the same time or spend ceiling. Do not equate token counts with subscription charges.
  5. Verify independently. Run the tests, inspect the diff and record manual corrections, failures and elapsed time. Repeat before drawing a broad conclusion.

WiseChecker has not yet published an independent head-to-head benchmark for this edition. No success rate, speed advantage or “best agent” claim is inferred from provider marketing.

When to stay with your current tool

If your current plan completes the work, fits your environment and leaves a reviewable result, there may be no reason to switch. If it fails, identify whether the cause is missing access, exhausted usage, an environment restriction or task quality. A more expensive model does not automatically solve all four.

Evidence and update policy

This independent reference is checked against provider documentation during editorial preparation, with software assistance. It is not an account-level test or a head-to-head benchmark. Prices, access notes and updates share one catalog, so a reviewed correction can flow to all five pages. Fetching a page or saving an edit does not, by itself, renew its verification date.

Each record has an explicit review deadline, no more than seven days after its check. Overdue records are labeled and excluded from price-based recommendations. Offers with an explicit expiry stop displaying as active after that time. Missing evidence means “not verified,” not “free,” “unavailable” or “no incident.”

Official sources establish documented terms; your provider account and local checkout establish your actual access and charge. We do not inspect either. There is no universal model ranking, automated publication of scraped claims or promise of continuous human coverage.
