What you can do with the QR Code & Barcode Reader and Generator
Reads QR codes and common barcodes from image files or your device camera and displays the string. QR codes can create URLs, text, emails, Wi-Fi, and vCards; EAN barcodes support check digit calculation and verification for standard and shortened types. Created codes can be saved as PNG or SVG.
Images, camera feed, entered URLs, Wi-Fi info, and contact details are not sent to WiseChecker’s servers. Reading, URL structure checks, QR/EAN generation, history, and image saving are all processed in your browser.
Image & camera scanning
Displays formats recognized from images, including QR codes, EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39, and Data Matrix.
Check before opening the URL
Read URLs are not opened automatically; the actual destination, Punycode, shortened URL, script mixing, and invisible characters are explained first.
Create 5 types of QR codes
Embeds URLs, text, emails, Wi-Fi connection details, and vCard contacts directly into static QR codes.
Create EAN-13 and EAN-8
Calculates the check digit from 12 or 7 digits, and verifies the provided check digit when 13 or 8 digits are entered.
Safety check before opening a URL read from a QR code
Since QR codes are images, you can’t directly see the link destination in print or email. IPA also explains that in QR code phishing, image-based URLs can bypass email URL checks. Don’t open immediately after scanning; compare the displayed destination with the official site or app domain.
This tool disables the open-URL button until you select “I’ve reviewed the destination and cautions.” It doesn’t query external URL reputation services for judgment, so it cannot detect unregistered dangerous sites or malicious pages on legitimate domains. “No obvious danger elements” is not a safety guarantee.
- Verify the actual destination:The hostname after “@” and before the first “/” in the URL is shown prominently.
- Read the warning:Checks for Punycode, shortened URLs, HTTP, IP addresses, invisible characters, and mixed look-alike characters from other scripts.
- Check against official info:Don’t trust only the organization name in emails or flyers; verify via saved bookmarks, not official apps or search engines.
- Pause before entering:If asked for login credentials, card numbers, or one-time passwords, stop using the QR code immediately.
How to spot Punycode, shortened URLs, spoofed domains, and dangerous characters.
| Check Items | What is displayed | Why be cautious |
|---|---|---|
| Punycode | ASCII form beginning with xn-- plus the decoded Unicode form | A normal part of internationalized domain names. Review look-alike characters and the actual destination before opening. |
| Mixed character sets | Check whether Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek characters are mixed in the same domain label. | Characters that look nearly identical can be different domains on a computer. |
| Short URL | Known shortening services such as bit.ly, t.co, and tinyurl.com. | A short string alone does not confirm the final destination. |
| Different domain containing brand name | Hostnames that include well-known service names but are not official domains. | service-login.example.com There are tricks that use leading characters to look like an official site. |
| Invisible characters and direction controls | Zero-width characters, bidirectional text control characters, etc. | They may change the display order or appearance to obscure the original string. |
| HTTP & IP addresses | Unencrypted HTTP or IP addresses that do not reveal the organization name. | There are legitimate uses, but extra verification is needed for login or personal data prompts. |
Unicode Consortium’sUTS #39 Unicode Security MechanismsThe concept of detecting look-alike characters from different scripts and script mixing is shown. Don’t conclude danger just because Punycode is present; judge based on the entire destination and purpose.
How to read QR codes and barcodes from an image or camera.
- Choose “Scan” and select an image file or “Start Camera.”
- With the camera, keep the entire code centered, avoid reflections, and stand back a bit.
- Check the string and format shown after scanning. The camera stops after scanning.
- For URLs, read the safety check, and only when needed select the confirmation box to open in a new tab.
The camera starts only on HTTPS pages and only after you grant permission. You can always scan an existing image instead. See MDN: getUserMedia().
Create QR codes for URLs, text, email, Wi-Fi, and vCards.
The QR codes created are static, storing your input directly in the code. No WiseChecker redirect URLs or expiration dates are added. Since contents cannot be changed after printing, verify URLs, phone numbers, email addresses, and Wi-Fi passwords before distribution.
| Type | Content for the code | Pre-Creation Review |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Web page URL | HTTPS, legitimate domain, presence of extra tracking strings |
| Text | Instructions, ticket numbers, templates | The more characters, the finer the code, so test with a real device. |
| mailto format destination, subject, and body | Display may vary depending on the recipient’s email app. | |
| Wi-Fi | SSID, encryption method, password, hidden network setting | Posting it in a public place lets everyone there read the password. |
| vCard | Name, organization, phone, email, address, etc. | Enter only the minimum necessary personal information |
EAN barcode creation and check digit
The standard EAN barcode type is 13 digits, and the shortened type is 8 digits. This tool calculates the trailing check digit when you enter the first 12 digits of the standard type or the first 7 digits of the shortened type. If you enter 13 or 8 digits, it verifies whether the last digit matches the calculation.
EAN barcodes are not arbitrary numbers to attach to products. GS1 Japan instructs that brand owners apply for a GS1 company prefix and set the product item code with the check digit. For official product distribution, follow those rules.GS1 Japan’s check digit calculation method and registration rules.
When to use PNG vs. SVG
PNG
A suitable image format for web pages, emails, documents, social media, and screen display. Enlarging blurs edges, so save at a resolution larger than the usage size.
SVG
A vector format that keeps edges sharp when enlarged. Suitable for print materials like flyers, business cards, and posters. Check if your print provider supports SVG.
If changing colors, make the code dark, the background light, and leave ample quiet zone. Prioritize readability over decoration, and test the saved file at actual display size on multiple devices.
Frequently asked questions about QR code and barcode reading and creation
Are images or camera footage sent to a server?
Nothing is sent. Reading and creation happen in your browser. No camera feed, selected images, or QR code contents are transmitted externally.
Should the read URL open automatically?
It will not open. It shows the content, the actual destination, and warnings, and opens in a new tab only if you select the confirmation box.
Is it safe if no obvious risk elements are found?
This is not a safety guarantee. This check only examines the URL’s character structure on your device. It does not assess the site’s current content, operator, malware, or external service ratings.
Is a site with Punycode dangerous?
No. Punycode is a normal part of internationalized domain names. Because look-alike characters can also be abused, the tool shows both the ASCII and Unicode forms for review.
Can I check the final destination of a shortened URL?
This tool doesn’t connect externally, so it doesn’t track redirect destinations. It warns about shortened URLs and advises verifying the sender or official information through other channels.
QR code cannot be read from image
Check that the entire code is in the image, and watch for reflections, darkness, blur, and tilt. For small codes, don’t crop the surroundings; try the original high-resolution image.
I don’t want to allow camera access
Permission is not required. You can take a photo with your device’s standard camera and select that image file to scan.
Does the created QR code have an expiration date?
None. This creates static QR codes with your input embedded directly. However, if the embedded URL or Wi-Fi password changes, you’ll need to recreate the code.
Do Wi-Fi passwords or vCards remain in history?
It appears in history while this tab is open, but even with device history saving enabled, Wi-Fi and vCard contents are not saved. You can manually delete history if needed.
Can I issue a new EAN barcode number?
Cannot be issued. It only calculates and verifies the check digit of the entered number and creates an image. For official product codes, follow GS1 Japan’s registration and setting rules.
