If a subscription page says Copilot Pro is active but the expected features are missing, check the exact product name before resetting Office. Microsoft’s Copilot Pro support page says the former standalone Copilot Pro is no longer available for purchase and its support ended on August 1, 2026. An old “active” label therefore needs an account or billing check; it does not guarantee that its former benefits can be restored.
Why Copilot Pro Features Stay Hidden Despite an Active Subscription
Standalone Copilot Pro, the current consumer Microsoft 365 Pro plan, and an organizational Microsoft 365 Copilot license are different products. Similar names do not make their entitlements interchangeable. Check the plan shown under Services & subscriptions in the Microsoft account that made the purchase, including its dates and any cancellation or migration notice.
Microsoft’s current AI usage guidance, updated October 2026, covers Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro. Features and limits depend on the plan and can vary by entry point and system conditions. AI benefits belong to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with other family members. Sharing Office apps is not the same as sharing AI rights.
For an organization account, inspect the account’s Copilot experience and ask IT to check the assigned license and tenant configuration. Eligible users can have Copilot Chat without the paid Copilot add-on, while additional licensed capabilities have their own requirements. A consumer receipt does not itself assign an organizational license. Microsoft’s license identification guide distinguishes the two account types.
Steps to Check and Restore the Features Your Current Plan Includes
- Match the missing feature to the current contract. Write down the exact action, such as a particular Word drafting feature, and whether you are using the web, Windows, Mac, or mobile app. Compare that feature with the current plan information. If your account still lists retired standalone Copilot Pro, resolve its status with Microsoft account support before assuming a technical activation failure.
- Check the account in the affected app. In Word for Windows, open File > Account and inspect the user and product information. Use the personal subscription owner’s account for personal AI benefits. Save your work before any normal sign-out and sign-in that support recommends; there is no need to remove every account from the device or erase Windows credentials.
- Look for a moved entry point. Microsoft’s July 2026 guidance describes the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint near the lower-right corner, with an option to position it beside the ribbon. Check that location rather than diagnosing a missing ribbon icon as lost entitlement. Other apps and builds can have different entry points.
- Update the eligible app through its supported controls. On Windows, check File > Account > Update Options > Update Now when available. A managed device may use an administrator’s update process. Do not impose one old version number as a universal minimum or change an organization’s update channel yourself.
- Refresh a valid current license. On Windows, the documented command is File > Account > Update License. On Mac, use the app-name menu > About the app > More Info > Refresh License. Save and close open documents, then restart the Microsoft 365 apps. These steps refresh an existing entitlement; they do not revive an ended product or add missing rights.
- Check app prerequisites and allowed privacy settings. The official missing-button guide covers connected experiences, update channels, and web cookie requirements. On a managed device, have IT review those settings. For a web license-validation error, use the documented cookie checks rather than deleting the entire browser history or turning off organizational protection.
Keep work-file use within your employer’s rules. Microsoft documents limited personal-plan use with work files in selected apps when the employer has qualifying desktop subscriptions and multi-account access enabled, excluding government tenants. This is a specific supported scenario, not permission to upload company material to any personal chat. See the conditions in Microsoft’s Premium guidance and confirm your own plan and environment.
If the Expected Features Still Do Not Appear
Separate four questions: is the current subscription valid, is the owner signed in, does this feature exist in this client, and has a usage limit been reached? Check Services & subscriptions and any in-product limit notice. A refresh cannot reset an exhausted limit, and “extensive usage” is not an unlimited-use guarantee.
On Windows, the Get Help app’s Copilot License Troubleshooter is intended for an eligible account whose icon is missing. Provide support the plan name, app version, account type, missing action, and a sanitized screenshot. Send billing evidence only through Microsoft’s secure account-support flow. Do not delete the Licensing folder, remove Microsoft.AAD credentials, or run volume-activation scripts to repair subscription Copilot.
If the feature is outside your present plan or the legacy contract has ended, review the available options only after that is confirmed. A purchase, plan change, or reinstall cannot guarantee every advertised capability in every app.
