New Outlook Loop Components: Why some classic users now see live content blocks

Some users of classic Outlook for Windows are surprised to see interactive Loop components such as live tables, task lists, and voting buttons appear inside their email messages. These live content blocks are part of Microsoft Loop, a real-time collaboration platform that was originally designed for the new Outlook and Microsoft Teams. The reason classic Outlook users now see these components is that Microsoft has started rendering Loop elements inline for recipients who do not yet have the new Outlook client installed. This article explains what Loop components are, why they become visible in classic Outlook, and how you can manage or disable this behavior.

What Are Loop Components and Why They Appear in Classic Outlook

Loop components are interactive Microsoft 365 objects that let multiple people edit content simultaneously inside an email message or document. Examples include a shared table where each recipient can add rows, a task list that updates in real time, and a voting button that collects responses. These components are created in the new Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, or Microsoft Teams. When a sender inserts a Loop component, the email contains a special .loop attachment and an inline preview that renders as a live block.

Classic Outlook for Windows (the version that uses a .pst or .ost file and does not have the “New Outlook” toggle) does not natively support creating or editing Loop components. However, Microsoft has updated the rendering engine in classic Outlook so that recipients can at least see the live content. This change happened via a server-side update to Exchange Online and Microsoft 365. The classic client now downloads a small HTML snippet that displays the Loop component as an embedded interactive element. This is why users of classic Outlook suddenly see live tables and task lists that were previously invisible or shown only as an attachment.

Prerequisites for Seeing Loop Components

To view a Loop component in classic Outlook, the following conditions must be met:

• The sender must use a client that supports Loop creation (new Outlook, OWA, or Teams).
• The recipient must be signed into Microsoft 365 and have an active internet connection.
• The classic Outlook client must be version 2208 or later (build 15601.10000 or higher).
• The organization must have Loop enabled in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

If any of these prerequisites are missing, the Loop component will appear as a .loop attachment instead of a live block.

How to Manage or Disable Loop Component Rendering in Classic Outlook

1. Open Outlook Options
   Click File in the top-left corner, then select Options from the left sidebar.
2. Go to Mail settings
   In the Outlook Options dialog, click Mail in the left navigation pane.
3. Open Editor Options
   Under the Compose messages section, click the Editor Options button.
4. Access Advanced settings
   In the Editor Options dialog, select Advanced from the left pane.
5. Disable live preview
   Scroll down to the “Show document content” section. Uncheck the box labeled Show live preview of Loop components in email. Click OK to close each dialog.

After completing these steps, Loop components will appear as a static image with a link to open the live content in a browser. The interactive table or task list will no longer render inline.

Using Group Policy to Disable Loop Components for All Users

If you are an IT administrator and want to prevent Loop components from rendering across your organization, use Group Policy:

1. Download the latest Office Administrative Templates
   Go to the Microsoft Download Center and get the ADMX files for Microsoft 365 Apps.
2. Open Group Policy Management Console
   Run gpmc.msc and create or edit a GPO for the target users.
3. Navigate to Outlook policy settings
   Go to User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Outlook 2016 > Outlook Options > Mail.
4. Enable the policy to turn off Loop components
   Find the setting Turn off Loop components in email. Set it to Enabled.
5. Apply the GPO and restart Outlook
   Run gpupdate /force on the client machines and restart Outlook for the change to take effect.

Common Issues and Limitations with Loop Components in Classic Outlook

Loop component shows as an attachment instead of a live block

If the recipient sees a .loop file attached to the email rather than an inline interactive table, the classic Outlook client is too old or the live preview setting is disabled. Update Outlook to version 2208 or later. Also confirm that the sender’s Loop component is not a legacy version that only works in new Outlook.

“This content is not available” error when clicking the Loop component

This error occurs when the recipient does not have the correct Microsoft 365 license or when Loop is disabled in the tenant. The sender must have an Exchange Online license with the Loop service enabled. The recipient also needs a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes Loop. Check the Microsoft 365 admin center under Settings > Org settings > Loop to ensure the feature is turned on.

Classic Outlook cannot edit or reply with a Loop component

Classic Outlook is read-only for Loop components. To edit a Loop table or task list, the user must open the email in Outlook on the web or the new Outlook client. There is no workaround to edit Loop content directly in classic Outlook.

Classic Outlook users can now see Loop components thanks to a server-side rendering update that converts the Loop object into an HTML preview.
