Copilot Chat Cannot Switch to Work Account: Fix

2026年6月15日 by wisechecker

You are signed into Copilot Chat with your personal Microsoft account, but the option to switch to your work or school account is missing or grayed out. This problem typically occurs when Microsoft 365 authentication policies, browser cache, or the Copilot app configuration block the account picker from loading correctly.

The root cause is often a conflict between your Microsoft Entra ID tenant settings and the local cached session. When the account switcher fails, you cannot access Copilot with Microsoft 365 Copilot license features such as grounded responses on your organization’s Microsoft Graph data.

This article explains why the account switcher fails and provides a set of step-by-step fixes that resolve the issue on Windows, the web, and mobile.

Key Takeaways: Fixing the Copilot Chat Account Switcher

  • Microsoft Edge > Profile > Sign out of all accounts: Clears the conflicting personal account session that blocks the work account picker.
  • Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school > Disconnect: Removes stale Microsoft Entra ID records that interfere with Copilot authentication.
  • Copilot for Microsoft 365 app > Settings > Account > Switch account: Direct method to force a fresh authentication prompt for your work tenant.

Why Copilot Chat Blocks the Work Account Switcher

Copilot Chat uses the Microsoft Authentication Library to present an account picker. When you sign in with a personal Microsoft account first, the library caches that token and does not automatically show work accounts from a different tenant. The account switcher relies on the browser or app to enumerate all available identity providers. If your organization has configured Conditional Access policies that require device compliance or multi-factor authentication, the switcher may fail silently and show only the personal account.

Stale Browser Cache and Cookies

The browser stores authentication state in cookies and local storage. When you sign out of Copilot Chat, the session token may remain in the browser cache. On the next sign-in attempt, the browser reads the stale token and skips the account picker entirely. This is the most common cause of the switcher not appearing.

Microsoft Entra ID Tenant Restrictions

Your organization’s Microsoft Entra ID tenant may have a tenant restriction policy that blocks external account enumeration. This policy prevents the authentication endpoint from sending work accounts to the Copilot Chat interface when a personal account is the primary session. The account switcher then shows only the personal account or displays an error.

Steps to Restore the Work Account Switcher in Copilot Chat

Follow the methods below in the order listed. Each method targets a different layer of the authentication stack. Test the account switcher after each method before moving to the next.

Method 1: Clear Browser Cache and Cookies for Copilot Chat

  1. Open Copilot Chat in your browser
Use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Do not use InPrivate or Incognito mode for this step.
  2. Open the browser settings
Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Privacy, search, and services
In Edge, go to Privacy, search, and services. In Chrome, go to Privacy and security.
  4. Select Clear browsing data
Click Choose what to clear. Set the time range to All time.
  5. Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files
Uncheck all other options. Click Clear now.
  6. Restart the browser
Close all browser windows and reopen Copilot Chat at copilot.microsoft.com.
  7. Click the account icon in the top-right corner
Select Sign out of all accounts. Then sign in again with your work account only.

Method 2: Remove Stale Work or School Account from Windows

  1. Open Windows Settings
Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts > Access work or school
Scroll to the list of connected work or school accounts.
  3. Select your work account and click Disconnect
Confirm the prompt. This removes the cached Microsoft Entra ID record.
  4. Restart your device
A full restart clears any remaining authentication tokens in the Windows token broker.
  5. Re-add the work account
Go back to Access work or school and click Connect. Sign in with your work credentials.
  6. Open Copilot Chat again
The account switcher should now show your work account as an option.

Method 3: Use the Copilot for Microsoft 365 App Instead of the Web

  1. Install the Copilot for Microsoft 365 app
Download it from the Microsoft Store or from your organization’s software portal.
  2. Open the app and click the Settings gear icon
Located in the bottom-left corner of the app window.
  3. Select Account
You will see the currently signed-in account.
  4. Click Switch account
A new authentication window opens. Enter your work email address.
  5. Complete the sign-in flow
Enter your password and approve any multi-factor authentication prompt.
  6. Verify the account switcher in the app
The app now shows only your work account. Personal account is no longer the default.

Method 4: Reset the Copilot Chat Web App State

  1. Open Copilot Chat in your browser
    Navigate to copilot.microsoft.com.
  2. Open Developer Tools
    Press F12 or Ctrl + Shift + I.
  3. Go to the Application tab
In Chrome or Edge, click Application in the top toolbar.
  4. Expand Local Storage and click the copilot.microsoft.com entry
You will see key-value pairs stored by the app.
  5. Delete all entries
Click the Clear All button or select each entry and press Delete.
  6. Expand Session Storage and clear it the same way
This removes the in-memory authentication state.
  7. Close Developer Tools and reload the page
The account switcher should now display the work account option.

If Copilot Chat Still Shows Only the Personal Account

Copilot Chat Shows an Error When Switching Accounts

If you see error code AADSTS50020 or AADSTS50105, your organization’s Conditional Access policy is blocking the authentication. Contact your IT admin and ask them to add copilot.microsoft.com to the list of allowed cloud apps in the Conditional Access policy. The admin must also ensure that the Microsoft Copilot service principal is enabled for your tenant in Microsoft Entra ID > Enterprise applications.

The Account Switcher Is Grayed Out on the Mobile App

On iOS or Android, the Copilot app uses the device’s built-in account manager. Go to your device Settings > Accounts and remove the personal Microsoft account. Then open the Copilot app and sign in with your work account. On iOS, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Delete Account. On Android, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > Remove account.

Copilot Chat Does Not Show Work Data After Switching

After switching to the work account, Copilot may still respond with generic answers instead of your organization’s data. This means the Copilot license is not assigned to your user account. Ask your Microsoft 365 admin to assign a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license in the Microsoft 365 admin center > Billing > Licenses. After the license is assigned, sign out of Copilot Chat and sign back in.

Copilot Chat Personal Account vs Work Account: Key Differences

Item Personal Account Work or School Account
License required None or Copilot Pro Copilot for Microsoft 365
Data grounding Public web data only Microsoft Graph data from your tenant
Admin control No admin controls IT admin manages via Microsoft Entra ID and Purview
Commercial data protection No Yes, when enabled by admin
Account switcher availability Always shows personal account Shows only after clearing cache or using the app

You can now switch to your work account in Copilot Chat by clearing the browser cache, removing stale Windows accounts, or using the Copilot for Microsoft 365 app. If the problem persists, check that your IT admin has assigned the correct license and that Conditional Access policies allow the Copilot service. For daily use, open the Copilot for Microsoft 365 app directly to avoid account switching issues.
