Why Stylus Pressure Sensitivity Breaks After Windows 11 24H2 Update

Quick fix: 24H2 changed the Wintab/Pen API stack. Pressure-sensitive apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, Krita) may need their pen driver updated. Reinstall the pen driver from the OEM (Wacom, Surface, XP-Pen). For Wacom: download latest Wacom Driver from wacom.com.

Your stylus worked perfectly. Pressure curves were dialed in for digital painting. After 24H2 update, the same pen feels different — pressure sensitivity is flat (every stroke is full pressure) or non-responsive. The pen driver no longer talks to the apps the same way.

Symptom: Stylus pressure sensitivity breaks after Windows 11 24H2 update.
Affects: Windows 11 24H2 with pressure-sensitive stylus.
Fix time: 15 minutes.

Why 24H2 affected pens

24H2 deprecated the Wintab driver model in favor of Windows Ink. Some art apps still use Wintab. The Wacom driver maintains a Wintab compatibility layer, but the implementation may have broken after the OS update. Driver updates restore the compatibility.

Method 1: Update the pen driver

  1. Visit your pen manufacturer’s site:

      Wacom: wacom.com/support

      XP-Pen: xp-pen.com/download

      Huion: huion.com/download

Surface: Surface devices update via Windows Update
  2. Download the latest driver explicitly compatible with Windows 11 24H2.
  3. Uninstall the old driver first. Reboot.
  4. Install the new driver. Reboot.

Method 2: Toggle the Wintab compatibility

  1. Open the Wacom Tablet Properties (or your pen vendor’s app).
  2. Find Wintab compatibility, Windows Ink toggle, or similar.
  3. Try toggling Windows Ink on if it’s off, or off if it’s on.
  4. Restart your art app. Check pressure response.

Method 3: In Photoshop/app preferences

  1. Photoshop has its own Wintab/Windows Ink setting. Check Preferences → Performance → Use Wintab or similar.
  2. For Krita: Settings → Configure Krita → Tablet input. Switch between WinTab and Windows Ink.
  3. Restart the app.

Verification

  • Draw with the pen. Pressure varies based on touch strength.
  • The pen settings test panel shows pressure response.

If none of these work

For older pens (5+ years), the manufacturer may have stopped Windows 11 24H2 driver updates. Roll back to 23H2 if pen pressure is critical for your workflow. For Surface Pen specifically, run the Surface diagnostic toolkit to repair pen drivers.

Bottom line: 24H2 broke some Wintab implementations. Latest pen driver + app-side Wintab toggle restore pressure. If neither helps, roll back to 23H2 until vendor catches up.
